Jewish Community Foundation—Hungry in San Diego—The recession has caused many local families to become first-time seekers of food assistance - the formerly middle class, seniors living on fixed incomes, single-parent headed households, even the military. The Jewish Community Foundation commissioned a study, funded by the Leichtag Family Foundation, to understand how philanthropy can better address food insecurity; to create a snapshot of current food need intake in order to facilitate a coordinated effort to meet the need; and to point the way for future action to eliminate hunger and food insecurity. Highlights of the study will be presented at 12 noon Thursday, Nov. 19, at the North University Library, 8820 Judicial Drive. The report will be followed by a discussion among panelists John Criswell, executive director of the San Diego Hunger Coalition; Dale R. Fleming, director, Strategic Planning and Operational Support of the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency; Colin Mathewson - Community Advocate for Price Charities; and Shaina Hazan, Leadership Development Associate, Jewish Family Service's Hand Up Youth Food Pantry. The panel discussion is cosponsored by Jewish Family Service and San Diego Grantmakers.
